Bones fic recs
These are likely to be all Brennan/Booth, just so's ya know. At the moment, I'm making a conscious effort to include only completed stories, but the status will always be noted with each rec, just in case I get a wild hair and post an exceptional WIP.
A note on ratings used: Spike/Buffy fandom has totally debauched me; most of what I've found rated M/NC-17 in Bones fandom would be pushing PG-13 for me. MAYBE. "Graphic" does not mean the same thing in Bones fandom as it does in Spuffy, I guess? Or I'm a horrible pervert. Maybe both. So, anyway. Now you know.
Title: Between Sleep and Awake
Author: MilkMamaReturns
Summary: A bizarre series of flashbacks brings Brennan back to the week before, reliving what could be fantasy or reality. What is truly tangible when you are between sleep and awake? WARNING: Includes graphic descriptions, sex, language, etc. RATING CHANGED TO M.
Rating: M
Notes: The flashbacks and timeline are a bit confusing at first, but stick with it, trust me. You're all smart people, and can handle non-linear storytelling. By the end of the first chapter, you should be into the swing of things, and can follow along as Brennan's mind copes with the situation she finds herself in.
Complete: Yes
Title: The War in the Woods
Author:
bloodwrites
Summary: Warning: Spoilers for Season 4. Sweets decides the team needs to re-bond, so he signs everyone up for an Outward Bound course. Booth without a gun, Cam without clean underthings, and Bones without... well, bones.
Rating: T
Notes: An odd premise, I know, but it works well enough, and sets up the sequel fic nicely. Each chapter is told from a different character's POV, and the author does a pretty bang up job accurately capturing the character's voices. It's a bit of a slow-starter, but push on, grasshoppers. Your persistence will be rewarded.
Complete: Yes
Title: The Killer in the Classroom
Author:
bloodwrites
Summary: Sequel to The War in the Woods. Brennan takes a sabbatical from the Jeffersonian to lure a serial killer out of hiding. Set sometime in season 4, B/B all the way.
Rating: M
Notes: Honest to God, even with the flaws (there's a lot of chaff that could be cut, imo), I'd be happy to spend money on something this good. It's an absolutely fantastic mystery. This story's opening makes up for the prequel's lack of snap at the start. The author hooks you utterly by the end of the page. Fantastic stuff.
Complete: Yes
Title: Feels Like Home
Author:
bea_tricks
Summary: When B&B are poisoned, they must find the person responsible before another attempt is made. Mystery, fluff, drama, smut, and romance abound! Set in season 3.
Rating: M
Notes: Ahh, forced to spend all their time together stories. Gotta love those, right? :) A little light on the mystery, though it's compelling enough to move the story forward, and comes complete with a red herring or two. But when everyone's there for the fluffy smut, the mystery doesn't need to be the main thrust (puns!) of the tale. And that's a good thing.
Complete: Yes
Title: As Empty as the Inside of Me
Author:
_missmargaret_
Summary: "I...if I had known, Ange...there’s so much I would have said to him...” Set Season 3, following Wannabe in the Weeds with a little Pain in the Heart. Events at Booth's funeral progress a bit differently, and Brennan is left unaware of the truth for two months instead of two weeks.
Rating: PG
Notes: Oh. My. God. Okay, so that's not the most insightful review ever, but I am honestly left a little speechless by this story. You will ACHE for Brennan. And share her joy, and fear, and happiness. Some facts are off, but hey, not much you can do when you get Jossed, even in the Bones-verse! WARNING: No lie, I went through 20+ tissues. I'll be the first to admit that I tend to cry with little provocation, but this was extreme even for me. But fear not for the ending! Your tear-clogged nose will be worth it.
Complete:Yes
Title: Lines (Make Me Want to Cross Them)
Author:
nekare
Summary: When it happens, like it was supposed to because there has always been a certain degree of inevitability with them, it happens like this.
Rating: R
Notes: Interesting presentation, and wonderfully in-character. Oh, if only it were this easy! A note on the rating, R is a stretch. If you're looking for hot sexy times, this is not gonna fit the bill. If you're interested in a ridiculously well-written, natural progression what if scenario, you're in luck, though.
Complete: Yes
Title: Therefore, Let Not Your Hearts Be Troubled
Author:
ladychi
Summary: Booth had liked such places, she remembered. Called them things like "holy" and "sacred". He'd believed in mysteries incomprehensible to man and had accepted whole-heartedly the premise of a single man/god giving his life for humanity.
Rating: G
Notes: Sometimes, you just need a story that makes your heart catch in your throat, you know? Short, sweet, and oh so adroitly handled--which is no mean feat, when it comes to Tempe and matters of faith.
Complete: Yes
Title: And It's Love That Turns Them Around
Author:
_missmargaret_
Summary: He was. Right, that is. About the dam. (We’re talking about Sweets, in case you’ve forgotten.) We’re talking about Sweets, but what we’re really talking about is Booth and Brennan.
Rating: PG
Notes: Yeah, so, did your heart break at the end of Parts in the Sum of the Whole? Here's the antidote. No over the top schmoop, just solidly them and ever so much better than what really went down.
Complete: Yes
Title: Four Places Booth Wants to Kiss Brennan
Author:
only_more_love
Summary: Four places Booth wants to kiss Brennan &mdash and one place he does.
Rating: PG
Notes: Very short, cute read. I tend to be biased toward long stories, with long chapters, because oftentimes short chapters end up leaving something to be desired. Y'know? But that's totally not true in this instance. If you have a quick stories to read when I need a smile list, you need to add this one to it. This is the first story of
only_more_love's I've read, and if it's any indication, there are going to be a few more of her stories in this rec list before I'm done.
Complete: Yes. And will take you all of five minutes to read all five chapters.
Title: From the Greek Paradeigma, Meaning "Example"
Author:
daygloparker
Summary: "Once upon a time, Agent Booth and Dr. Brennan had a baby."
Rating: PG
Notes: It's baby fic, of a sort. Very much a stylistically constructed story, employing all manner of things I would normally run screaming from, but somehow
daygloparker works it to her advantage. It's touching and sweet, and the characterizations are very well done.
Complete: Yes
Title: Stalemate
Author: labquint
Summary: While on a stakeout, Brennan and Booth become involved in a deadly game with a serial killer. Booth is badly wounded, will Brennan be able to save him?
Rating: PG-13
Notes: This story is fast-paced and exciting. labsquint generally writes case fics, which I tend to find drag a bit with her copious attention to detail. That's not to say they aren't well-written, they are. Yet I feel that she loses the forest for the trees when she presents the full case, and gets bogged down by her research. This story skips the case, gets to the climactic confrontation between our heroes and the bad guy, and deals with the consequences of that confrontation. It's good stuff, and a format I wish she'd revisit.
Complete: Yes. Note that this is part one in an ongoing arc of stories. All are clearly labeled, making them easy to read in order.
