Firefox Persona - Spike

Preview of the header:

Get it (here) (footer is here)

Click the thumbnail below to see the Persona in use

(Info on Firefox Personas)

UPDATE! -- Get the Persona HERE at the Personas Gallery. This is a lower quality version of the one you can install manually, however.

Okay, here's the deal. You need Personas Plus to install a Persona manually. I didn't realize there was a difference. :( You can get that HERE. I tried to upload to the gallery, but the file size of the header is too big, so that will have to wait until I get home and can crack open Photoshop and hopefully bring it down. I'm really sorry for the inconvenience. I think I'll leave Personas alone after this. :\

1. Save the header and footer image to your hard drive. Note where you've saved them, you'll need to find them later when uploading.
2. If you have Personas installed, click Tools on your menu bar, place your mouse cursor over Personas, then click on "Preferences". here is a screenshot (If you don't have Personas installed, go here, install the add-on, restart Firefox, and then do step 2.)
3. Ensure the box "Show Custom Persona in Menu" is checked and close the box.
4. Click on the little fox again. Mouse over "Custom" in the menu and to the right find and click "Edit"
5. Click the "Browse" button next to the Header field, and browse to where you saved the header image(step 1). Single click the filename, then click the "Open" button. Repeat this process for the Footer field, using the saved footer file this time.

Click here for a graphical walk-through.

Don't forget to change the font color! :)

eta: Please, PLEASE let me know if you're having difficulty with the manual install. While I'd prefer not to post copyrighted images to the Personas Gallery, I will seriously consider it if these directions are confusing or just too difficult. If you have an opinion on where the directions could be clearer, let me know that, too. I've looked them over again, and have made a few changes, but I'm sure there's room for improvement.

I'm still trying to dial this in, the suggested width is 3000 pixels, so that's what I've done, but that means that a lot of displays won't show the shiny bits on the left. So, if you like this and would like it resized to fit your screen (if 3000 pixels is about 1500 too many, for instance) let me know. I do have a version that's 1280 pixels wide.

Of course it's all snaggable, and I hope you enjoy! :)

Okay, I'm apparently too stupid (or tired, whichever) to figure out how to do this. Can't you just upload the persona to the personas page?

[identity profile] xtanitx.livejournal.com 2010-03-18 09:45 am (UTC)(link)
I'm thrilled you'd like to use it! Thank you! :)

I'd rather not upload it to the Gallery if at all possible. :\ I have no claim to the photos used, and Firefox have a rule about that. Yeah, I know there are other Personas in the Gallery that are using copyrighted images, I'd just prefer to not be one of them if I can avoid it.

I'm going to amend the original post with the caveat that I'll consider posting it to the gallery if it turns out the manual install is proving to be difficult for lots of people. Maybe we can get it sorted together. :) What's causing the trouble for you? Actually, I'd consider it a favor if you'd be willing to work with me to go through the install, or at least tell me at what point you're running into trouble; maybe I can improve the directions to help other people, too.

[identity profile] eyezrthewindows.livejournal.com 2010-03-19 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
*blushes* I'm...too stupid to figure it out. That's the only reason. I have *no* idea how to go about following the instructions! Really, don't worry about it. I'll just stick to the persona I'm using. I just got excited when I saw a Spike persona and got all disappointed when I couldn't figure out how to work it out. It's not like there's tons of them out there, either!

[identity profile] xtanitx.livejournal.com 2010-03-19 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
No, it's not you. It's loads more involved than I expected it to be. I've since submitted a slightly lower-quality (probably not noticeable unless you're me who's LOOKING for that stuff, y'know?) version to the Personas Gallery. When (if?) it gets approved--and I have no idea how long that will take--I'll send you a PM with a link. Sound like a plan?

I'm really sorry for the hassle. I was over-anxious and should've taken my time with figuring out the process a bit more before posting. Patience isn't a strong suit, sometimes! lol Thanks for bearing with me. I'm so grateful!

[identity profile] eyezrthewindows.livejournal.com 2010-03-19 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
Cool beans! Thank you! I hate that you had to go through all that trouble, though. I know I'm part of the minority who couldn't figure it out, LOL.

[identity profile] xtanitx.livejournal.com 2010-03-19 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
I'll arm wrestle ya for who gets to shoulder most of the blame. :D Honestly, in a weird way, I'm a little glad there were bumps along the way. Of course I wish it'd gone easy peasy for everyone, but now I know what works and what doesn't. My real regret is that it's been a pain for the people I made this for. Sort of defeats the purpose of sharing it in the first place.

Anyway, I did some poking around, and the approval queue seems to be HUGE (around 5000 images), so it may be a while, but I will be sure to let you know if I make it through -- and judging by what else is there, if I don't, I'm gonna be pissed. lol

[identity profile] eyezrthewindows.livejournal.com 2010-03-19 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
I know! Like I said in my other comment. Over 90% of what gets put on there is copyrighted material. I wouldn't worry about it. I'm sure it'll get approved. And my GOD. 5000 in a queue?! Damn. No wonder so many get put up per day.

FINALLY, the image made it through the gauntlet.

Enjoy! :D

[identity profile] eyezrthewindows.livejournal.com 2010-03-24 05:13 am (UTC)(link)
Wearing it now and it is awesome! I hope you make tons more because there can never be too much Spike/JM. :)
ext_15429: ('77 Spike)

[identity profile] xtanitx.livejournal.com 2010-03-24 01:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks! I may yet make more, but probably not for a while. We'll see. :)

[identity profile] lil-coyote.livejournal.com 2010-03-18 01:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I have personas installed, but I have no 'little fox' in the lower left corner of my screen. Is there some other way to get to prefrences? Because the only firefox logo is the link on my desktop to open it.
ext_15429: (basement)

[identity profile] xtanitx.livejournal.com 2010-03-18 01:51 pm (UTC)(link)
There is, yes. On the menu bar at the top of the window, click Tools. Hover your cursor over the Personas link, and that should open up a sub-menu. Click on Preferences.

Here's a screenshot:

I'll edit the instructions to reflect that access option. Thank you for saying something! :) Let me know if you have any other troubles.

[identity profile] lil-coyote.livejournal.com 2010-03-18 02:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Figured out part of the problem. You can use the personas offered by firefox and not have 'persona plus'. Once I installed 'persona plus' I got the tiny fox and the persona option in tools.
ext_15429: (lonely beast)

[identity profile] xtanitx.livejournal.com 2010-03-18 02:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Ooooh. *facepalm* I never would have thought of that. I didn't even realize there was a difference. :\ I'm really, really sorry!

I think I'll probably just be a big brave girl and post it to the Gallery, then. I'd really wanted to not, but it's proving to be more of a hassle than I'd ever anticipated to do it manually.

[identity profile] lil-coyote.livejournal.com 2010-03-18 02:30 pm (UTC)(link)
As long as you point out they need 'persona plus', seems like it should be ok?
ext_15429: (Default)

[identity profile] xtanitx.livejournal.com 2010-03-18 02:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I hope it'll be okay. It may end up being the only option, anyway, because I'm not sure I can bring the file size down enough to host at the gallery. I'll give it a try when I get home from work, though. Anyway, thanks for being patient and all around awesome and helpful in figuring this out. I really appreciate it. :)

[identity profile] lil-coyote.livejournal.com 2010-03-18 02:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, hey, no problem. I learned stuff with this too. =]

[identity profile] 3xcereal.livejournal.com 2010-03-18 02:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Cool! I'm installing Personas as I type and will be using this. :) Thanks!

You're welcome! Enjoy. Let me know if you run into problems, we'll try and get it sorted quickly. :)

[identity profile] purpledodah.livejournal.com 2010-03-18 03:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I think this is great. got it set up now. doesn't seem to matter which header I use tho, they don't fit right. the 3000 one I lose the bits on the left, the 1280 one loads up and is too short and on both Spike's head is only visible to just above his nose. Is it cos I have a widescreen laptop?
ext_15429: (smoke)

[identity profile] xtanitx.livejournal.com 2010-03-18 04:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Yay! I'm glad it's working for you. Mostly! lol

I really think Firefox is being a little nutty with the 3000 pixel width suggestion.

The 1280 would fit if your screen resolution were 1280 x n px, but I suspect your resolution is higher than that since you have a widescreen laptop. If you'd like, I can try to make one that will fit your screen when I get home. Just let me know your screen res. :)

[identity profile] purpledodah.livejournal.com 2010-03-18 04:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I think the problem is because my screen is 1440 x 900 px. I've tried loading other headers too. so far the only one that looks good is the tim burton jack skellington one here http://www.getpersonas.com/en-US/gallery/Designer/Scarynight I think its because the pic is set high up on the right so its not cropped by my toolbars and as its all black it just fits perhaps? most of them look awful, I did find another Spike one, so I don't think they mind copyright stuff so much. Yours is much better than the one there btw!
ext_15429: (silhouette me)

[identity profile] xtanitx.livejournal.com 2010-03-18 05:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Ahh, I see exactly what you mean now. Some of the toolbars get in the way no matter what, as far as I can tell. Unless you're willing to remove the URL bar & Search bar like I have in the example screen grab, which is redonk to expect from people. Kinda sucks. :( If I ever feel wacky enough to try tackling another Persona attempt, I'll try to keep high & to the left placement in mind.

Thank you, too, for the compliment! :) Hopefully I can get this beast down 200 KB so I can post it in the gallery and give people another Spike option.
ext_15429: ('77 Spike)

[identity profile] xtanitx.livejournal.com 2010-03-18 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, so I shifted the image about a bit on this one, though I don't know if it'll make much of a difference. And this version is 1440 px wide, so should (maybe?) fit better, width-wise, at least.

<a href="http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo199/tanit_graphics/personas/1440.png>resized persona</a> I did manage to get a slightly lower quality one submitted to the official Gallery, but it hasn't been approved as of yet. :\ Hopefully soon! Thanks so much for your interest & help while I've flailed about in the deep end of the pool sans water wings. It's definitely been a learning experience for me, and I appreciate your equanimity! :)

[identity profile] purpledodah.livejournal.com 2010-03-18 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
You are a genius, and a little darling! It worked, thank you so much. I can now ogle Spike instead of doing what I'm supposed to be doing. *hugs*

I'm sure you'll get the header approved, and I bet it's really popular too.
cordykitten: (earth_vexer job well done)

Adding to memories. I'm using FF too but with the Bookmark symbols, they are harder to read this one. Saved the pics though.

PS: I looked through the official ones and what I've found is:

http://www.getpersonas.com/en-US/persona/78001 Buffy- Triangle
(There is a bangle one too.)
http://www.getpersonas.com/en-US/persona/78005 Buffy- Slayers

And - http://www.getpersonas.com/en-US/persona/71943 James Marsters - Spike
There is one DB too.

But that's it. No Spuffy one and not more BtVS. Maybe I overlooked them.

So it's good to see you having one more. :D
ext_15429: (smile)

[identity profile] xtanitx.livejournal.com 2010-03-18 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks for the links! They certainly make me feel much better about submitting copyrighted material, that's for sure. And I'm super happy you like the graphics, and the idea on the whole. :)

I may have to rethink not making any more, especially knowing how few options there are for BtVS/AtS fans. I'll have to see how the submissions process, er, proceeds, and go from there.

[identity profile] eyezrthewindows.livejournal.com 2010-03-19 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
If it makes you feel any better? About 99% of the personas I've looked at (and I've been through the 1000 whatever there are searching unsuccessfully for more Buffy/Angel personas) are copywritten material. Obviously, *no one* is heeding the no posting copywritten material thing, lol.
